BREAKING NEWS - EEE WARNING FOR HORSES
(last updated 8/3/2010)
July 26th, 2010 – DCPAH has confirmed that 3 Michigan horses have tested positive for the mosquito-borne disease “Eastern Equine Encephalitis or EEE”. Several other horses are highly suspect and tests are pending.
Tips for preventing mosquito-borne diseases include:
Avoid mosquito bites: Use insect repellent when outdoors, especially from dusk to dawn.
-
Look for EPA-labeled products containing active ingredients, such as DEET, Picaridin (KBR3023), or oil of lemon eucalyptus (p-me nthane 3,8-diol). Apply more repellent, according to label instructions, if mosquitoes start to bite.
-
Mosquito-proof homes: Fix or install window and door screens and cover or eliminate empty containers with standing water where mosquitoes can lay eggs.
-
Protect your horses: West Nile Innovater +EWT is recommended for all horses in the U.S. Horses should be vaccinated annually. It’s not too late this year to vaccinate your horses. If your horses have never had the vaccination, it requires a 4 week booster in order to be effective.
-
Use approved insect repellants to protect horses.
-
If possible, put horses in stables, stalls, or barns during the prime mosquito exposure hours of dusk and dawn.
-
Eliminate standing water and drain water troughs, and empty buckets at least weekly.

BREAKING NEWS - Canine Influenza (last updated 11/11/2009)
Canine Influenza is a contagious disease of dogs caused by the Canine Influenza Virus (CIV), H3N8 subtype. Canine flu is different from human influenza viruses and it is not contagious to people; however it is very contagious among dogs. Influenza viruses are always adapting and at times may infect more than one species. Current science indicates that dogs cannot contract H1N1 or any other human influenza viruses. Interestingly, infection with the H1N1 virus was recently confirmed in a cat in Iowa, which subsequently made a full recovery.
Clinical signs of infection with CIV include a cough that may persist as long as 2-3 weeks. The influenza virus weakens dogs’ immune response and may create a favorable environment for secondary bacterial infections in the upper respiratory tract. When this occurs, dogs may also have sneezing and yellowish green nasal discharge. Most dogs will recover with no complications and do not need any medication. Approximately 10% of dogs will get pneumonia due to secondary bacterial infections
A new vaccine for CIV was just released in May of 2009 and we are now offering the vaccine. This vaccine is recommended only for dogs at high risk of exposure. This includes dogs housed in large groups including boarding facilities, breeding kennels, doggy day care, grooming salons, dog parks, and dog shows. Please contact us with any further questions and we’d be happy to schedule you an appointment if you’d like to have your canine companion vaccinated. |
