HEARTWORM
DISEASE

Heartworm disease
causes heart failure. It is transmitted by mosquitoes. Any exposure
to mosquitos = Risk of Heartworm Disease. Since there are many mosquitoes
in Michigan, heartworm disease is very prevalent among pets that
aren’t given preventative.
At
your first puppy visit your puppy receives a FREE dose of Heartgard Plus.
Each month after that your puppy should be weighed and appropriately
dosed with a form of heartworm preventative.
We strongly
recommend Heartworm Testing & Preventative Care for all dogs.
It doesn’t matter whether your dog is a pampered pooch or
is active and strong, every dog is at risk for getting heartworm
disease, a potentially deadly condition. If your dog is due or overdue
for Heartworm Testing, or has never been started on a preventative
program, we welcome you!

What
is heartworm disease?
Heartworm is a parasitic disease that can affect any dog regardless
of age, sex or habitat. It is found in all parts of the United States
and many parts of Canada. Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes.
Heartworms live in the hearts and lungs of infected dogs.
Why
is heartworm disease a danger?
Heartworm is the most serious common parasite for dogs because it
stresses the dog’s heart by restricting the blood flow and
also damages other internal organs. The heart may enlarge and become
weakened due to an increased workload, and congestive heart failure
may occur.
Symptoms
of heartworm infection in dogs include:
- Difficulty
breathing
- Coughing
- Fatigue,
a dog that tires easily
- Weight loss
- Reduced
ability to exercise
What
can you do to protect your dog?
- Heartworm disease is 100% preventable.
- Year round prevention = Heartworm Test every other year.
- Seasonal prevention (April thru November) = Annual Heartworm Test.
- Deworming monthly
using heartworm preventative, is a good idea since several of the
parasites your puppy can carry, can also infect humans.
